A Week in Shanghai: The City of Magic

Shanghai is a vibrant and cosmopolitan metropolis, where perennial Chinese history meets with innovative development. Shanghai was such an incredible city and in one week, we just kept finding ourselves amazed at how nice it all looked. The touristy and famous Bund with colonial buildings was a good starting point. Walking on the promenade we got a great view over the Pudong skyline which is one of the best things to see in Shanghai, particularly at night with all its lights.

Feasting in Shanghai

Shanghai's food scene is a paradise for food lovers. Of course, we couldn't skip a taste of Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). Delicate wrappers bursting with broth and juicy pork are addictive every time. A local option is Shengjianbao, a pan-fried bun crispy on the bottom and juicy inside. Be sure to check out the Yuyuan Garden Bazaar nearby, where there are all sorts of street foods on offer, from skewered meats to sweet rice cakes.

A Week in Beijing: The Heart of China

Leaving behind a few thrilling days in Shanghai, we made our way to Beijing, China's political and cultural capital. We first headed to the stunning Great Wall of China. Walking along and taking in the views was one of our top highlights. The sprawling palaces and courtyards of the Forbidden City gave a view into China's imperial splendour. Be sure not to miss the Temple of Heaven, where emperors prayed for good harvests.

Beijing's Culinary Delights

Beijing is just as impressive when it comes to food. Peking Duck is a must-try dish, known for its crispy skin and tender meat. Watching the skilled chefs prepare and carve the duck right at your table is part of the experience. Another culinary gem is Jiaozi, or Chinese dumplings, which come in various fillings and are perfect for a hearty meal. For a unique dining experience, head to a traditional hutong (narrow alley) and enjoy local specialities at family-run eateries.

Final Thoughts

My two weeks in China split between the modern marvels of Shanghai and the historical wonders of Beijing, were nothing short of spectacular. From jaw-dropping attractions to mouthwatering cuisine, both cities offered a rich tapestry of experiences that left me yearning for more. Whether you're an avid foodie, a history buff, or simply looking to explore a new culture, a trip to China should definitely be on your travel list.
